A Sense of Belonging

by Charmaine McIntosh | on September 22, 2020

Sense of Belonging

The founder of Adlerian Psychology, Alfred Adler believed that each individual has the goal of belonging and feeling significant in their lives.  Humans strive for belongingness and meaning. When we feel that we belong, we are happy.

A sense of belonging (social interest) creates cooperation, and we want to contribute to the community and society.  It is important to feel that you are not along; that is why having a sense of belonging is so fundamental in Adlerian Psychology and the human race.

Self-Compassion

by Charmaine McIntosh | on August 01, 2020

Self-Compassion

Kristin Neff defines self-compassion as “… acting the same way towards yourself when you are having a difficult time, fail or notice something you don’t like about yourself.  Instead of just ignoring your pain with a ‘stiff upper lip’ mentality, you stop to tell yourself ‘this is really difficult right now,’ how can I comfort and care for myself intros moment?”  The components of self-compassion are (1) self-kindness vs. self-judgment, (2) common humanity vs. isolation, and (3) mindfulness vs. over-identification.  Kristin Neff suggests exercises such as (self compassion break, supportive touch, change your critical self talk) to practice self compassion.  Go to her website to learn more about self-compassion and try some of these exercises out.  Self Compassion Exercises
